Since 2011, this K-through-8 school has partnered with the folks at MicroSociety, Inc., to use entrepreneurial education to teach kids about planning, launching and managing businesses — and teach citizenship, humanities and service along the way. Throughout the school day, science, math, social studies, and English language arts learning all incorporate entrepreneurial concepts in different ways.

Penn Hills Charter to Share Its ‘Entrepreneurship Mindset’ With Other Schools

Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship in Pittsburgh plans to share its expertise with other schools in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties that serve low-income areas where residents “are historically underrepresented in entrepreneurship,” says Wayne Jones, the school’s CEO, reports NEXTpittsburgh. In December, the Richard King Mellon Foundation awarded a $250,000 grant to MicroSociety Inc., the Philadelphia-based nonprofit that provides the educational model for grades K-6 at the school. The aim is to recruit up to three new Pittsburgh schools.

MicroSociety Inc. and Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship are teaming up to take their innovative career readiness program to schools in the Pittsburgh region serving low-income students, thanks to a generous $250,000 grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation. The grant supports an 18-month regional expansion effort to bring MicroSociety 2.0, an initiative that enables schools to take their MicroSocieties digital, to more schools in Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties that serve low-income communities and to further develop the MicroSociety 2.0 online platform. This project will lay the groundwork for and begin building a network of MicroSociety schools in the Greater Pittsburgh region with a unified mission to prepare students for the modern workplace.

Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship was awarded for the first time accreditation from the Commission on Elementary Schools of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in April, TribLive reported. The school was also granted a 3-year $1.5 million from the Pennsylvania Coalition of Public Charter Schools in early May as part of Pennsylvania’s Charter School Program Grant.

Three very different educational institutions are coming together this fall to develop an innovative career readiness program for Pittsburgh-area elementary school students, thanks to a generous $250,000 grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation. The Foundation has awarded the grant to MicroSociety Inc. (MSI), a Philadelphia education nonprofit, for a digital project with Penn Hills Charter School of Entrepreneurship (PHCSE) that will help prepare students in grades K-5 for the high-tech, high-skill workplace of the future through online society-building and mentorship by adult professionals. As part of the project, students majoring in entrepreneurship at Duquesne University’s Palumbo-Donahue School of Business will also mentor PHCSE students.

Allan Baile is the Microsociety Coordinator for Aspen Heights Elementary School in Red Deer. They are currently in their 5th year of MicroSociety; preparing students for the real world. Allan has a passion for coaching and sport. For the past five years he has coached High School basketball at the Junior Varsity level at Lindsay Thurber Composite High School. Allan has been teaching for over 27 years, 23 of which have been with Red Deer Public School District and 4 in remote communities throughout northern Alberta. Aspen Heights has come a long way in educating students to become caring, respectful and knowledgeable citizens. Allan believes we need to continue to inspire the leaders of tomorrow by imparting the values of MicroSociety and ensuring long term stability with this unique, and innovative program.
